Throughout the year, we will be showcasing these projects, which focus on a variety of subject areas. In this issue: the <\/strong><a href=\"..\/un-nouveau-projet-dagroforesterie-en-rdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>Peri-urban Agroforestry project in Haut-Katanga<\/strong><\/a><strong> (APHK) project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The APHK project, which was launched in 2019, is contributing to <strong>strengthening of governance and management of an agroforestry perimeter<\/strong> <strong>with a surface area<\/strong> <strong>of more than 1,500 hectares<\/strong> on the outskirts of the mining city of Lubumbashi, in the extreme south west of the Democratic Republic of Congo. With a dual objective focusing on <strong>food security and the fight against deforestation<\/strong>, this project follows on from the 2012-2017 <a href=\"..\/projet\/agroforets-pour-le-developpement-de-kipushi-en-rdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Afodek<\/a> project, funded by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/eeas.europa.eu\/headquarters\/headquarters-homepage_en\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ek-link\">European Union<\/a>, which enabled <strong>productive restoration of degraded woodlands.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agroforestry perimeter targeted by the APHK project&nbsp; is managed by the Federation of Kipushi agroforestry perimeter associations (Capak), an organisation bringing together ten agroforestry operator associations with <strong>a total of 130 members<\/strong>. Each member is contractually committed vis-a-vis Capak to <strong>enhance a 12-hectare plot<\/strong> based on an agroforestry system combining plantation of acacias (used as heating or cooking fuel) and food crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aiming to make Capak autonomous<\/strong>, the Commons Programme convention is supporting facilitation of collective reflection among the federation\u2019s member associations, in order to <strong>foster management of the common comprised by the perimeter <\/strong>itself, as well as <strong>collective water management services<\/strong>, maintenance of firewalls and nurseries.
